The subject ‘learning’ offers a very wide scope – there is the matter of schooling of children, providing the very basics of reading, writing and arithmetic, plus many other fantastic subjects these days.  Then there is the education of older students who need to get qualifications for a particular career or vocation.   After these can be the apprentices who are literally learning on the job.  In my youth far more young folk took up apprenticeships for life long trades such as motor mechanic, bricklayer, plumber, electrician and there was no way of becoming that fashionable high street hairdrresser without taking a 3 or 4 year apprenticeship first.  For many years this form of learning whilst you work went out of fashion.  In the lean times when there is a financial crisis and firms do not have ready money to splash out on new workers, it was left to youngsters to try to get the qualifications at college, then try to get the job to suit.  Happily, we have now returned to the very senible and worthwhile investment era of apprenticeships for top class manufacturers and high tech companies.  But the competition is extremely fierce
