Our Apprentices in their own words

Alex Pagan and Tanya Nyatsambo joined Dynamic Training UK in July 2014. Both Alex and Tanya have been supporting us within their apprenticeships roles and have become valuable  team members.
Find out what it is really like to be part of the team by learning about what our apprentices have to say about their own experiences:

Tanya- Marketing Apprentice

How did you hear about apprenticeships and what made you decide to do one?Marketing Apprentice at Dynamic Training UK

I’ve always known about apprenticeships but I decided to do one because I wanted to get work experience and get some qualifications. Doing an apprenticeship was a great way to do both.

What sort of tasks do you do as Marketing Assistant Apprentice?

I create promotional material, organise and attend promotional events for the organisation. I also often have to do research and analysis to for projects that the organisation are looking to do. Daily I have to complete necessary processes and database relevant to supporting my role and any company objectives.

Do you find it challenging balancing work and study?

At times yes. Fortunately I get a day off every week and I use that day to do any pending tasks to complete my qualification. It’s important to be realistic and to maintain a pace, this way you won’t fall behind in your work or qualification.

Were you assigned a mentor and if so how did they help you through the apprenticeship?

I was assigned an assessor, James. He was able to talk me through all the specifics of my apprenticeship and helped me understand the apprenticeship programme and mapping practical work that I did on the job with work needed for my qualification.  This was helpful because it made me see the connections between my work and qualification and it helped me understand the credit framework.
My line manager, Iwona is also a mentor. She’s very experienced in apprenticeship qualifications and marketing. This was a big help to me because she is able to support me and give me advice on both parts of my apprenticeships.

What are you hoping to get out of your apprenticeship?

I want to absorb as much as I can about my role, excel in everything I do and also grow as a person. There are a lot of skills I’ve gained working in a fast paced environment with go getters that you can’t really learn from any qualification. I’m glad I’ll be taking those skills with me.

What advice would you give to young people unsure whether or not to go to University or to do an Apprenticeship?

It’s important to look at what career you want to do in the future then work backwards. Websites like nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk are very useful and tell you what skills/qualifications you need for your desired career. Some careers allow you to get all the training you need with an apprenticeship and some need you to go to University.
An apprenticeship is such a great opportunity to get a nationally recognised qualification and get work experience in your desired field. It can also be a stepping stone to university that will look great on your application.

What characteristics do you think make you a great apprentice? Is there any advice you would give to those hoping to follow in your footsteps?

A great apprentice has to be willing to learn and be open to feedback. Even though there is study for the qualification an apprenticeship is a very practical way to learn. My advice is take it all in and learn from everyone and everything around you. Also don’t be afraid to ask questions

Alex- Business Administration Apprentice

How did you hear about apprenticeships and what made you decide to do one?

I had heard about apprenticeships through a number of school events and decided that it would be right for me as it would offer me the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and a qualification in my desired job role.

What sort of tasks do you do as a Business and Administration Apprentice?

There are a number of tasks that I do as part of my role such as: Processing paperwork and ensuring that all papers meet the required standard. Helping any other staff with preparing for their training sessions such as hand-outs or PowerPoints. Creating certificates for people that attend our training sessions. I also book training venues for tutors for when they need them.

Do you find it challenging balancing work and study?

At first I did find it a challenge but after speaking with my assessor I have found that I am now able to succeed in work and study.

Were you assigned a mentor and if so how did they help you through the apprenticeship?

I was assigned an assessor to help complete my qualification who I meet every month to discuss my progress.

What are you hoping to get out of your apprenticeship?

I am hoping to get my level 2 qualification in business administration and progress to a level 3. I would also like to develop my role in the company.

What advice would you give to young people unsure whether or not to go to University or to do an Apprenticeship?

I would advise them to think about what they need to succeed in their chosen career path. For something like business administration, I feel that the work experience will be more valuable than a degree. However there are some professions that require a degree or a degree will be better than work experience.

What characteristics do you think make you a great apprentice? Is there any advice you would give to those hoping to follow in your footsteps?

The ability to learn and be eager to learn would help make a great apprenticeship. This is because this is a learning journey where you are here to learn new things as part of your job role. A positive attitude is a good trait to have as there are times where work may be difficult but the ability to persevere will not only help you but impress your employer.
